King Danjong: A Tragic Royal Story
Crowned in 1452—betrayed, exiled at 15, gone at 16.
King Danjong (1441–1457, 단종), the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty, ascended the throne in 1452 as a child at the age of 12. He was dethroned by his uncle King Sejo, and exiled at the age of 15. He died just a year later at 16, leaving behind one of Korea’s most poignant royal legacies, marked by loss, loyalty, and quiet dignity.
Today, Jangneung stands as the royal tomb of King Danjong, offering visitors a place of profound historical significance and quiet reflection.
It is notably known as a filming location for the film The King’s Warden (2026, 왕과 사는 남자). It is also closely associated with the story of Eom Heung-do (엄흥도), who is said to have recovered and honored the remains of King Danjong. Associated with stories reminiscent of classic Korean historical cinema such as The King and the Clown (2005, 왕의 남자), reflecting the poignant legacy of King Danjong.
