The Andong Maskdance International Festival is Korea’s premier cultural festival, celebrating ancient performance arts alongside international folk troupes.

UNESCO Recognition: In 2022, Talchum (Korean mask dance drama) was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Cultural Spirit: Historically, Talchum served as a vibrant blend of dance, music, and theatrical satire. It allowed commoners during the Joseon Dynasty to openly mock the hypocrisies of the ruling aristocracy (Yangban) and corrupt clergy, fostering social harmony through communal laughter.

Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori: Originating in the 12th century, this village ritual was performed to appease local deities for peace and a bountiful harvest.
Distinct Wooden Masks: Unlike other Korean masks made of paper or gourd, Hahoe masks are carved from solid alder wood and are recognized as National Treasures. The articulated jaw on characters like the Aristocrat (Yangban) and Servant (Choraengi) allows dynamic facial expressions as the performer moves.

How to Get There from Myeongdong (Seoul)

The fastest and most convenient route is via high-speed train (KTX). Total travel time is approximately 2.5 hours.
