Le Franc Rooftop Cafe on Insadong
Insadong – One of Seoul’s Most Enduring Cultural Districts
For many travelers who have visited Seoul, two neighborhoods often remain in memory long after the journey ends: Myeongdong and Insa-dong.
While districts such as Bukchon Hanok Village, Seochon, and Ikseon-dong have gained popularity in recent years, Insadong continues to be one of Seoul’s most recognizable cultural destinations.

Its history stretches back to the Joseon Dynasty, when the area was home to government offices and aristocratic residences. Traces of that era can still be found today among traditional architecture, historic courtyards, and art spaces scattered throughout the neighborhood.
Following Korea’s modernization and the Japanese colonial period, Insadong gradually became a center for antique dealers, traditional crafts, and fine art merchants. Efforts to preserve the district’s unique cultural character led to the founding of the Insa Traditional Culture Preservation Association in 1987. In 2002, Insadong was officially designated as Korea’s first Cultural District, recognizing its importance in preserving the nation’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Today, Insadong continues to evolve. Contemporary cafés, galleries, and creative spaces have joined traditional teahouses and artisan workshops, creating a unique atmosphere where old and new Seoul coexist.
Wandering through its narrow alleys reveals countless treasures—antique shops, calligraphy studios, contemporary galleries, handcrafted souvenirs, and hidden courtyards waiting to be discovered.
Among these evolving spaces is a rooftop café that offers a fresh perspective on one of Seoul’s most historic neighborhoods.

Le Franc – A Rooftop View Above Insadong
Located at the entrance of Insadong, Le Franc occupies the upper floors of Insa Art Plaza, a cultural complex that combines gallery spaces with contemporary dining and relaxation.

Interestingly, KHOREA first discovered Le Franc through a recommendation from a rather unusual source. Curious to see whether the suggestion was justified, we decided to visit personally.
What KHOREA found was more than simply a café.

Le Franc felt like a place quietly preparing for the future of Insadong—a space that embraces modern tastes while remaining connected to the artistic spirit that has long defined the neighborhood.

The building itself serves as an art gallery on its lower floors, while Le Franc occupies the fifth-floor indoor café and the sixth-floor open rooftop terrace.
The rooftop offers one of the most distinctive viewpoints in the area. From here, visitors can enjoy sweeping views stretching across Insadong, Ikseon-dong, and toward the northern skyline of Seoul.

Yet the greatest luxury may be something simpler.
Unlike many crowded cafés in central Seoul, the seating here is generously spaced, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Combined with attentive service and thoughtfully prepared food, the experience feels remarkably unhurried.

Whether stopping by for brunch, coffee, cocktails, or an evening meal, Le Franc provides an inviting place to pause and appreciate the changing character of modern Seoul.

A Different Way to Experience Insadong
Most visitors come to Insadong seeking traces of Korea’s past.
Le Franc offers something slightly different—a place where visitors can observe how tradition and modernity continue to shape Seoul together.

With a cup of coffee in hand and the rooftops of Insadong stretching into the distance, it becomes easy to understand why this neighborhood remains one of Seoul’s most enduring destinations.
Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a historic district is not from the street below, but from above.

Editorial episode
The conversation with the manager later became one of the most memorable moments of the visit.
When he asked who had recommended the café, we casually replied, “Someone from America.”
He looked slightly puzzled before we showed him ChatGPT↗ on ediotor’s phone.
For a brief moment, both of us seemed amused by how travel recommendations are evolving in unexpected ways.
